Should you join Greek Life?

Should you join Greek Life?

Karsyn DePuy is a junior at the University of Tennessee Knoxville and part of Alpha Omicron Pi’s Omicron Chapter. My knowledge of Greek life begins and ends pretty much with the few seasons of the early 2000s show GREEK I watched, so I called in an expert. Here’s an interview with Karsyn about what you need to know. (edited for length)

What is the most attractive thing about Greek Life at a university?

The aspect of sisterhood. Going to college can be such a scary thing, and it’s a great way to make friends that will be friends for a lifetime. It’s also a great way to connect to people in the business world with all the chapter alumni.

What is the general time commitment of being in a sorority/fraternity?

We have meetings every Monday that last maybe an hour and a half. We also do service hours and social, philanthropy, and sisterhood events which maybe take up 6 hours in an average week.

How do you find the right house for you?

While I was rushing, I focussed on the philanthropy of the chapter and the chapter’s ideals and principles. The principles that drew me to AOII include character, dignity, scholarship, and college loyalty.

Any advice for rush week?

Go in blind. Doing too much research on the chapters and their reputations will give you an unconscious bias. And follow your heart! Just because you’re a legacy or have friends in a certain chapter doesn’t mean you’re required to rush that chapter. Find the best possible chapter for you.

How much should someone expect to pay in dues and fees?

Dues and fees vary based on the school and the chapter itself. Since I attend a large SEC school with one of the largest chapters of my sorority the dues and fees can be a bit overwhelming. You pay the most as a new member and if you live in the house. Our dues include things like t-shirts, social events, our meal plan for the food at the house, and executing philanthropy events. On average, we pay about $4,000 a year.

Any final thoughts?

One thing I try to tell everyone when they ask about Greek Life is that Greek Life isn’t the only life in college. There are so many clubs and organizations to join on campus and it’s important to keep that in mind while starting college!
