“Only boring people get bored” is the maxim that haunted my summers when I was growing up. But getting creative about how to have fun when it feels like you’re melting isn’t always easy to do. At least when the heat won’t let up, it narrows the options down. After all, is there a better feeling than cooling off?
Here are a few classic activities to take advantage of in the nearby area:
Pools and water parks are where it’s at
Splash Summit, the Provo Recreation Center, several splash pads, and even Lagoon are appealing locations for beating the heat.
Hit the library
AC is no small thing for many of us poor college students whose housing accommodations are not always ideal in the summer months. My favorite library to visit is the Fulton Library at UVU, which is home to the Roots of Knowledge stained glass exhibit. Staring at the history of the world can take up hours, no sweat.
Let a sweet treat do the work
Unless you’re lactose-intolerant, ice cream never lets you down. Penguin Brothers is a memorable shop on Cougar Boulevard in Provo that serves unique flavor combos, but there are cheaper options, too. The McDonald’s vanilla soft serve cones are generally $1 plus tax, and are practically gourmet, in my book. If you do have dairy issues though, I recommend Costco’s frozen yogurt, or the dole whip served at Jake’s Brookside in Springville, both of which cost about the same as the McDonald’s cone.
Go for a ride
Catch a nice breeze by trying out the rentable e-scooters all over the city. A lot of people enjoy riding them into the canyon to hiking spots and parks like Bridal Veil Falls. There are e-bikes and tandem bikes, too! BYU Outdoors Unlimited is a great source for renting equipment.
Join the river rats
Renting tubes to float down the Provo River is a beloved pastime. There’s rental equipment for tubing at BYU Outdoors Unlimited, as well.
Become nocturnal
This is mostly a joke, but it’s what a lot of people’s bodies do naturally anyway when the days get longer. I merely suggest not to fight it, if you’re so inclined. The nights are cooler in more than just a physical sense, too! I won’t lie, this is a dangerous road to go down, but it’s also a valid one.
